Magical two-tone trees

The cherry scouts have posted some impressive rootstock fails over the years, where a cultivar is in the throes of being overcome by its Prunus avium rootstock. The ones with 'Kanzan' scions are the most noticeable, producing obviously two-toned trees. A new scout is about to post a fine example, and now I'm surprised to find that I can't point her to a thread where I have collected these. Let's see what I can dig up. [Edited ]- I've posted several, but did not find the one I actually remember. Maybe I'll find it one day.

The tree in the opening post has a nice mix of the two colors which makes it quite attractive. I wonder if it's practical to purposefully allow the rootstock to grow, have it blend in with the cultivar, but also kept in check through judicious pruning so it doesn't take over.

 

I agree that the first photo is kind-of attractive, but looking at the branch configuration, if that's what it takes, it's hard to imagine that one could figure out how to judiciously achieve that.

I found the photo I was thinking of - it's from back before the Neighbourhood Blogs started. It was posted in 2007 at Identification: - Prunus Avium - Small singles, green leaves, large round tree, mid to late season. The tree lives in Kensington-Cedar Cottage, and it turns out to be the tree in the second posting here in this thread. I've remembered this white-over-pink arrangement all these years, but it no longer looks like this. I didn't recognize it at all from @Anne Eng 's photo from two years ago.

I was just there today, and there are no signs of blossoms...white or pink.

It's not only 'Kanzan' trees on which this phenomenon occurs - it's just so obvious on those. @yaletowner did well to notice this on an 'Akebono' in Fairview

 

@tknd found a 'Shiro-fugen' example, and yes it qualifies - extra points even because they're harder to spot. In Surrey and North Delta
