Whitcomb is finally out at the wee park at Sophia and 15th. Been watching these three trees for the past month......in fact it is around the same time last year that it came into bloom! Feb 12 last year.
Thanks, Lisa. I don't see a photo from 2021, will have to believe you. My problem now is that these don't pass my "visible from two blocks away" rule for being considered "in bloom", so I have to figure out a date for the map. I don't see that the temperature is supposed to get up to 10C degrees in the next week, but it's still quite a way till the March 8 date I'd picked for most places except the West End and other tropical neighbourhoods. I'm still happy to have this teaser for the festival's Blooming Now - Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival (vcbf.ca) page.
The three 'Accolade' trees on the east side of Yukon (between W. 14th and 15th Avenue) are still there, but there is really only one good tree holding up, the other two are mere stick shadows of themselves. Reaching out to grasp the street lamp in its bloom at March 7, 2022.
'Rancho' flourishing on the east side of Main, between E.14th and E. 15th. Four (and a half) trees in bloom at March 28, 2o22.
Two tone (Kanzan/Sweet Cherry) tree at E11th & Glen Dr. Looking at every direction from E10th & Glen Dr. (Favourite on the Map - ID: 1188) This neighbourhood is amazing!! Taka
I had the same experience as Taka yesterday biking down the St George Bike path past Nightingale school, -my Moms old elementary school in the 1930's- Looking in 3 directions, south, west and north, Cherry, Cherry and More Cherry!
Did u notice all the broken branches? the snow fall in February took quite a toll on those trees, but the look lovely now!
These pics were taken March 03 2023 just after the "record" snowfall., you can still see some of the snow on the ground. Lots of breakage on these old trees, but they were still trying to bloom! Anne's pics from March 29 are much nicer with all the pink!
Yes, this is tea swamp park. When we walk to yoga we walk past here. I monitor these cherries almost year round!
A group of 3 Ranchos, or maybe it was 4 on the west side of Sophia between 15th and 16th next to Tea Swamp Park blossoming on Thursday
Shirotae is finally showing up in the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood. On the west side of Carolina, between E. 12 and E. 13th. In bloom at April 17, 2023, showing both white and pink buds. It appears to be a sturdy, mature little tree, as (for now) there is no action on the suckers evident in the last photo.
It looks trapped but this 'Ama-no-ga-wa' isn't giving up without a fight, and until Mount Pleasant neighbourhood has another representative, this valiant "pillar cherry" in the alley behind Main Street (east side Main, between E. 14th and 15th) will hold the flag. Looking past peak bloom at April 28, 2023.
Whitcomb at Tea Swamp Park, definitely not visible from 2 blocks unless you know to look for them....even then probably just 1/4 block. If you look really hard at the full tree there is pink on the left side.....Look REALLY hard :). These pics taken last week, and there is more pink showing this week... But in this cold weather any sign of colour is a sign of spring!!
Thanks, Lisa. I still can't tell if these are early flowers on a tree yet to bloom, or is this all we're getting this year. I'm inclined to think that there would be more of pink cast from partly opened buds if most of the tree were filled with buds and is yet to open.
The Somei-yoshino in front of Mnt Pleasant Elementary.....next to Dude Chillin Park! lots of Dudes Chillin the other night in the beautiful Sunshine!!
Akebono also next to Mnt Pleasant Elementary. The flowers were a little closer to head height but the trees were tucked in behind the Somei-yoshino.
