Wild vegetable ? Need help identifying something

Hi!

I found this plant growing wild in a sunny field on a hill up behind my house, in Connecticut and am wondering what it might be .. it's very thorny, and smells kind of like a bell pepper, but I've never seen it before anywhere..

any clues as to what it might be ? It was growing wild like a vine, interspersed with giant wild thistles.
