I had noticed that this plant made several attempts to grow in my garden but when I tried moving it did not survive the transplant. The one in the photo I just let it grow and is now over 13 feet tall. But too close to the porch. Not sure what it is but I have seem lots in some local parks.

IMG_1130.JPG I have trimmed your pic to illustrate the leaf shape/gland bump.

Ailanthus altissima....... commonly known as tree of heaven, varnish tree.

Note the gland ...a tiny lump on the back of the leaves. see my pic.

Tree from Hell in many places would be a better name.Recommend you removed asap.
Before you find suckers in the middle of your sitting room.

I lean Rhus as well -- is there a general fuzziness to the leaf stalks?

I have no experiences with other sumacs, here we have only Sicilian Sumac - Rhus coriaria. Other sumacs (including Chinese Sumac - Ailanthus altissima) are also likely option.

Agree with Ailanthus altissima - an invasive weed in your area, unfortunately
Not Varnish Tree, that's Toxicodendron vernicifluum.

That teaches me for copying and pasting from wiki..!
    wiki......"Ailanthus altissima
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ailanthus altissima /eɪˈlænθəs ælˈtɪsɪmə/,[3] commonly known as tree of heaven, ailanthus, varnish tree, or in Chinese as chouchun (Chinese: 椿; pinyin: chòuchūn), is a deciduous tree in the family Simaroubaceae.[1] It is native to northeast and central China, and Taiwan. Unlike other members of the genus Ailanthus, it is found in temperate climates rather than the tropics."

Well I took a saw to it, could not pull what remained. Just a stump left that I hope does not regrow.

Unfortunately, it will regrow, with a vengeance! Expect hundreds of root sprouts all around . . . Ailanthus is notorious for it :-(

I think I got seduced by the tropical appearance of this plant.

Right. It's considered an invasive plant here.
