White, puffy berry, two seeds, low to the ground - ID please. They measure up to 1 cm in diameter. I found these plants at the bottom of a small aspen grove. there's several fruits to a plant. The leaves are smooth, light green, ovate, and the stem is ca 1mm in diameter no more than 1 ft tall. I think this plant is past its prime but I took this picture yesterday 10-1-08 Thank you for your help.
I don't believe it's a snow berry. The plant's berry here is much lighter, as if it were made of cotton candy. It sort of "deflates" when you open it to check for the seeds (2) the berry is round, almost reminds me of a tiny balloon and the skin has the feel of a mushroom. The laves are very thin. Snow berries are much "heavier" or juicier is a better word. But thank you for you quick reply.
My experience with snow berry is more the description of your plant, kind of a soft, puffy, not juicy fruit. This may vary with ripeness.
Thank you all. Symphoricarpos albus, this one convinced me. Also the book "wild berries" By Betty B Derig helped. I just wanted to be extra sure.
Several species occur in the Rockies. You are liable to encounter others if you continue your explorations.
