I found some saplings that I wanted to start as bonsai. I am not certain what they are. They look like pine but I also have juniper in the land near my home. I also saw some pine saplings that have those long pine needles. These saplings look different from the pine saplings I saw. I have 2 photos of the small saplings and a closeup photo of a branch of a tree that the saplings were found near. I live in southern Louisiana. http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-6/749785/tree.jpg http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-6/749785/tree2.jpg http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-6/749785/NNFPR-100_0900.JPG
I thought they may be, but I am not sure if they came from that tree that I have the photo of the closeup branch. The saplings have sort of a pine look, also? So, you feel sure they are not pine, but juniper?
Cypress family conifers such as junipers produce needle-like foliage for a short time when raised from seed. Some species also have this foliage later in life, Chinese juniper for instance may produce a mixture of needles and scale-like leaves. And some common horticultural forms never leave the juvenile (needle-leaved) phase. Most pines (Pinus) have longer needles produced in bundles.
