Can anyone tell me what kind of tree this small purplish plant is? I bought it at Lowes home improvement and my husband threw out the insert.

Quite possibly a sand cherry, Prunus...I forget. Gets pink flowers just as the leaves are emerging, very pretty! Are the leaf edges serrated? Are there white markings on the trunk and branches? Will get, probably with no pruning about 8' or so tall and almost as wide.

More importantly, why is it growing so close to the house? Or is the picture misleading?

Yes it is purple sand cherry! I remeber that from the card that was attached when i bought it. I know it is kind of close to the house, but we are new home owners and wanted instant curb appeal so we just bought things and planted. I know it wasn't the proper way to do things so now I'm learning as we go or shall I say as we grow. Thanks for all the help. Here is a better view of what we have done so far. I'm sure I'll have plenty more questions in the future.

Is there a heavy lining of some sort between the beds and the vinyl siding?

I hope there is some protection for the house too - folks on another design forum are always bemoaning the propensity of developers to leave these extremely narrow beds next to the houses that allow the growth of virtually nothing with any height or width. The temptation to do just this - put a raised bed right against the house, and/or plant things that will become too wide - becomes almost irresistible. That said, you can prune the back branches off the sand cherry and depending on the amount of light it gets, it may grow fairly upright.
