I was in a formal garden in Ireland last summer and photographed this beautiful flower. I'm not sure if it is a bulb, or a flower seed head, or the actual flower. They were beautiful! I want to be able to put a name to the flower. Can anyone help? They grew about three feet tall or so, and the photo was taken in August.

It's an echinops species, probably Echinops ritro. The North American common name is globe thistle.

Thank you for your prompt reply. Do you know anything more about it? Is it a bulb, and is this the flower in its "prime", or its flowering state?

Sure... they grow everywhere essentially - extremely hardy and undemanding, and are commonly grown. It's a herbaceous perennial, not a bulb. Those are the "flowers" in your photo. However, to be more accurate, the ones in your photo are only actually about to bloom. If you look closely at the flowerhead on the right edge of your photo, you can see little blue flowers on the round head itself - those are the actual "flowers".

A google search will provide more information, if needed.
