    These are Narcissus...commonly called Daffodils.
They are from bulbs which die back after flowering and reappear again in the spring of the following year..

Yes some grow from seed.... but from seed to flower takes several years!

Thank you. Probably I sowed seeds in last spring but didn't see them at all.

It may take 7 years from seed to flower.
Impossible to sow last year and get flowers this year.

These are what people normally plant....dry bulbs.

I didn't plant bulbs. We moved in the house two years ago but never saw Daffodils here...or I forgot. The previous owner never planted anything. Last year I tilled the area, moved plants around and put in compost and now they come out everywhere. Must be a miracle. I'll keep watching and see what happens next.

If there was a lawn before where they grow maybe you overlook them if they didn't bloom last year. Now, with all this compost and well aerated soil they got strong enough to bloom again.

Sorry for being so prosaic, miracles happen sometimes, too :)

It seems to me the same plant or almost, but now with purple / blue flowers. Maybe you can see the stem, used to have yellow flowers, that was cut at the bottom. Is it still a daffodil or what?

That's a bluebell, also long thin leaves, but not the same long thin leaves. Also a bulb.

    Agree with wcutler.
It is possibly a Spanish bluebell...Hyacinthoides hispanica.
Flowers are normally blue or white or pink.
It has several small flowers on a single stalk that look like a bells.
They also take several years from a seed to a bulb that is mature enough to flower.

Narcissus or daffodils are normally yellow ..some are white or have orange in part ...but never blue.

Looks like you dumped several bulbs very close by. You can dig them up after the leaves died down and replant them separately. Daffodil bulbs are relatively big, but Bluebells bulbs are very small, so be watchful not to overlook them.
Here is a good resource on planting bulbs: How to plant and grow bulbs, corms and tubers | Thompson & Morgan. Go to the middle of the page to see pictures of the bulbs.

Thanks but I swear I didn't plant these, though glad to have them. I also got a lot of grape hyacinth and another similar looking plant. I bought a truck of compost from Vancouver landfill. I suspect these bulbs came with the compost if that is possible. Another possibility, I guess, is one of the previous owners planted some years ago and they grew up after I resoiled the garden.
