I'm in PA and I've looked EVERYWHERE to identify this low growing, variegated plant. I have not seen it larger than about 5" in diameter, however, it seems to show up in patches. I have not noticed a flower. It is growing in a shady area with a high overstory of pines & mixed hardwoods. Any help with identification would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

It is a member of the genus Goodyera, commonly known as the rattlesnake plaintains. You mention a typical habitat for these small orchids.

See: Goodyera pubescens on the Connecticut Botanical Society web site as an example of one. I suspect that this species is the one you've shared with us.

    Thanks!

Thank you!!! -- I never would have guessed it, although there are other wild orchids growing out there. Now I'm going to have to watch for flowers!
