Help! I have no idea what this shrub is. It looks like something simple that I should know, but I can't figure it out. I attached a picture. Does anyone know what this is? Thanks!
Looks like Horehound (Marrubium vulgare) to me. Invasive member of mint family, formerly used to make the (awful tasting) sore throat candy.
I agree with the phlomis. The seed heads look exactly right. What colour is the flower? Leonurus also has the same type of seed head.
I am going to stick with Marrubium showing old flower heads (leaves at flower bases mostly unapparent). I see it like this all the time. It may depend on where you are geographically, (horehound is common in So. CA, where I live) and I don't know how invasive Phlomis is (your plant looks like a "volunteer" weedy plant rather than an escaped domestic). I can see some younger basal leaves near ground level (lower left in photo) that look right for Horehound. But I would be gleefully proven wrong; please post a reply stating what you think this plant turns out to be if you can get it identified! Thanks!
