I have been trying to figure out what this plant is for a while, but have not come across anything that seems right.

I found it in a wash very near Lake Havasu (on the California side) a few days after a rain, in November. When I went back to the same wash in late December, I couldn't find the same plant but I did find others that may or may not be the same species.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Something in the family Solanaceae, maybe a Solanum, maybe some other related genus.

    Maybe Physalis crassifolia

I came across the same plant in Borrego last week, and was able to ID it as Greene's ground-cherry (Physalis crassifolia). I found this website that was quite helpful in ID'ing SoCal desert plants: http://www.abdnha.org/03flower_main.html .
