Hello, I'm so glad I found this site! The plant in question is one my mother brought back to Minnesota from Arizona about 20 years ago. I inherited it about 5 years ago, and have never known what it is. It would be great to know so I could care for it properly-- it hasn't looked very healthy lately.
It bloomed once and had small white flowers. The new growth is covered in small white hairs (see photo), but as it ages the hairs fall off. The roots are very shallow... I have had to set it back in the pot on occasion. Any help will be greatly appreciated... my mom loved this odd looking plant!

It appears to be the same plant as the one in the thread any idea what kind of plant this is? | UBC Botanical Garden Forums. I've not heard of this plant producing white flowers, yellow is the norm. Your plant is in quite bad shape. If there are any plump, less desiccated segments left in your plant I suggest you separate them (by giving them a twist) and laying them on top of some moist soil; add a sprinkling of soil around the base of each segment to encourage rooting. If you look closely you may find tiny rootlets already in some pieces.

When I first saw the photo I thought of Hatiora salicornioides. Apon closer inspection it was in such poor shape, it made me doubt my initial thoughts. Especially the part about "It bloomed once and had small white flowers. The new growth is covered in small white hairs."
I don't water mine very much and it doesn't seem to mind a crowded container. I water more frequently when in yellow bloom.
    Cheers, LPN.
