A lone flower sprouted then bloomed by the side of my house. I didn't plant it and I am curious as to what it is. Can someone please help me identify this?

The photo was taken June 3, 2016 in Oakland County, Michigan

It's a poppy. I see someone posted one like this in a blog a few years ago, mentioning that it just popped up.

I've never tried to name a poppy, but it looks like this should be Papaver somniferum Paeoniflorum Group. Maybe someone could say if that's right or not.

By coincidence, I just got home from a garden club meeting where the presenter showed a photo of this poppy growing wild in a field. He called it an opium poppy. When I looked up Papaver somniferum a moment ago, I found that they are referred to as 'Opium Poppy' so I think Wendy is right about the name.

I have pink ones in my garden which I pick on long stems before they release their seeds and hang to dry over a container of some sort . . . the dried seed pods are very attractive but you probably wouldn't want them all self-seeding in your garden.
