This plant started growing in my garden in August and I have no idea whether it is a weed or what the heck it is... any ideas?

    Thanks.

It looks like it could possibly be a Common Foxglove Digitalis purpurea. They grow quite easily from seed and are native to many areas of the Northwest. They are a Bi-annual plant so what you have there will most likely bloom next summer. I have bunches of them in my flower beds and they have spilled out into the yard and woods around the house.

Grows wild here, but is not native.

Absolutely. One plant will produce a large abundance of seed that will fall into the garden and begin growing the following season. As I said, they are Bi-annuals, so it may take several years before you have blooms every season. They are very easy to grow, requiring no special care other than to stake the flowers as they get a little tall sometimes and tend to fall over.
