At least I think it's a shrub. It has never flowered and hasn't grown much since we've lived here, a little over a year. I asked on gardenweb and one person thought it was a Photinia x Fraseri, but it has remained green without any red and has never flowered. What do you think? My second question is about a tree that some people think is a Ricinus, while others think it is a Fatsia japonica. Whatever it is, it has popped up in a couple of places in our backyard, too. I've never seen any seeds or berries or flowers on it and it, too, has remained the same size. I appreciate any help you might have to offer!
Welcome LieslMcQ. Please could you add a close up of the leaves for first shrub. 2. Don't think it is right for Ricinus. In Ricinus the leaf stalk is attached to the underside of the leaf, not the edge as yours shows. See this pic... http://www.wuvie.net/zanzibar07.jpg Your plant looks more like Fatsia.
I went outside to make sure that shrub had not ever turned color, and sure enough, there were some red spots and what looks like the beginnings of some buds. Naturally! Anyway, thank you all so much for the responses! I have been going insane trying to find out what everything is in the garden and trying to get help with basic questions. I really, really appreciate the welcoming posts and the jump to help!
Wouldn't it be wonderful if people that sold a house did so with a complete garden guide, scale drawing of what's planted where, and proper care & feeding there of? So often we get people at the plant clinics bringing in samples of their new yard piece by piece for an ID, care & feeding, etc. My Dad left a diary about his Orchard on Lopez Island. First plantings with type of fruit tree, propers names, where purchased, results, replacements, additional plantings and comments over 35 years. I can proudly hand that to the new owner when (& if) it sells. Barbara
Wow, that is so cool. I will absolutely be doing something similar with our yard, though I don't anticipate selling any time soon!
