I dug up these two trees from my flower bed that were surrounded by day lillies. I wanted to know if maybe they were some type of bush that the previous owner of the house had planted or if they were just plain old trees that grow anywhere. Not sure if they are both the same type or not. The first two pictures are one plant and the third is the other. It's quite interesting what you can find when you start digging up a previously owned yard! :)
They look like hedge cotoneaster (Cotoneaster lucidus) I have a few of these in my garden and the birds eat the berries in the fall and spread the seeds everywhere. I can usually dig up about 10 or more seedlings every year and give them away. They are great plants, have nice white flowers in the spring and great fall colour. They could have been left over from the previous owner or like I said birds could have dropped the seeds.
Sorry, Cotoneaster lucidus has alternate leaves. Pics show opposite leaves. http://images.google.com/imgres?img...earchBox&rlz=1I7SUNA_en-GB&sa=N&start=36&um=1 http://www.ag.ndsu.edu/pubs/plantsci/trees/eb38-27.jpg
So if that's not what it is then the search goes on. I'll just keep them in pots and grow them up to be big and strong. I wonder if I could grow them indoors during the winter.
I'm sure you could, and if not, put it in a sheltered area that stays cooler, like a basement or garage, for it to go dormant (if it is a type that cold causes dormancy, that is...) Either way, if you like it, I'm sure you can find a way to over-winter it!
