We have a beautiful tree in our backyard just a few feet from our house. The gardeners all call it a Fresno, but I am unsure of its proper identification. It is very big and the roots are long and grow thick. We have the same kind of tree in our front yard, but it is much bigger and its trunk is several feet in diameter. The roots of the front tree are huge and have broken the driveway and sidewalk in many places. While I don't care about the broken driveway in front, we are concerned that the tree in our back yard will break the slab foundation (new) that is under the new part of the house. It is about three feet from it. The roots have grown and surfaced very quickly in the three years that we have lived here. Can anyone identify the tree for me (picture attached) and advise me on possible options. I love the tree and don't want to remove it. In the attachment it is the large tree without leaves, on the left (next to the Eugenia). Thanks for any input.
Fresno is Spanish for ash (Fraxinus), and the tree certainly looks like one. Best to get an ISA-certified arborist in for an on-site inspection for safety and root issues.
Since you're bothered by it and it's already been topped, thus setting it up for likely future failure (breakage) it would be best to take it out and let the broadleaf evergreen tree next to it dominate the space.
