    is this Malus fusca? Lovely little tree, nice foliage, no flowers yet.

    Will you have ongoing access to the plant? If so, post updated pics when leaves emerge / flowers are out. Definitely something in the Rosaceae.

    Without question one of the black hawthorns, either C. douglasii or C. suksdorfii.

    Looking again I'm thinking C. monogyna - I didn't look at the habit photo before, and this week I drove by C. monogyna (or C. x media) in bloom.

    But that was in Oregon. Up there it might be at the stage of development shown in your picture.
