The attached photo is of the leaves and fruits of a small, multi-stemed tree growing near Washington DC; probably an ornamental. The fruit is hard with fluffy outer coating that can be rubbed off. The leaves are simple, alternate with very fine serrations above half-way up the leaf. Any suggestions on identity, please?
The serviceberries are told apart by technical characters not visible in the picture. And different authors have not defined them all in the same way. Nursery plants are often assigned to the wrong species.
