Hello, Can anybody give me a crash course in tree identification? I am from northern climes and would like to learn more about all the tree species present here in Vancouver. Right now I am learning them using buds, bark, fruit and form as there are no leaves (decidicuous anyway). I have a developed a list of a 100 trees I would like to know by sight by the end of the month. Looking forward to hearing back from someone.
first look at bud arrangement, alternate? opposite? there are a number of good books but I think experience is the best. if you need lessons give me a buzz, I can work with you hourly. :) most of the common trees here can be identified from 50 feet away with a short look. once you get some practice with them.
there is a list for the ISA certified arborist test that covers the pacific north wet fairly well, if you want to get some names to ponder. contact the PNW chapter if you want to ask for a copy. http://www.pnwisa.org
