tree id

    The friend that gave me this little tree doesn't know what it is. I've looked in tree books and I think it looks like it could be - alder? - hazelnut? Any help appreciated, thanks!

    Elm Ulmus of some sort.

    thanks, there aren't too many elms in these parts, and this is a seedling my friend dug out of her garden when digging a pond. But I'll double check for elms in her neighborhood. We have lots of alder around here (and fir and maple) that reseed readily, and hazel, which is why I thought of them. I'll have to wait and see what this one produces when it's bigger. I don't have the skills to determine one tree from another, especially when it's so tiny. I'd be happy if it is an elm... thanks again!
