Can't be Aletris, as that is a monocot with parallel leaf veins, whereas the mystery plant is a dicot. Sorry, don't know what it is though.
Leaves do not match: on the photo leaves are basal and entire, whereas Phryma leaves are cauline and serrate.
Steph77: your suggestion was great - you id the plant- the plant in question is also called knotweed or jumpseed, scientific name: polygonum virginianum I just went out and took more pictures, the leaves are changing color and are yellow now and the long stem carries many seeds thank you all for your help and interest I think it's an interesting plant in the woods
