I've just returned from Western Quebec where I observed some plants I cannot identify:
    1. Tall shrub with feathery flower
    2. Red-stemmed, possibly climbing
    3. Red-berry producing small tree-like shrub
    4. Dark-red leafed, about 30 inches high

    1. Aruncus, a goat's-beard.
    2. Looks like a hawthorn, Crataegus sp.
    3. Some kind of elderberry, Sambucus.

Were these in a gardening situation?

Yes, all found in a garden that was planted by previous owners of cottage near Shawville QC.
No. 1 does look like goat's beard. I thought no. 3 was an elderberry but it's different than the one I know. I think you are right.
The leaf doesn't look right for no. 2 to be a hawthorne, but you could be right about that too.

Could no. 4 be black snakeroot?

Black cohosh (Actaea [Cimicifuga]) was my first thought for number 4 as well.

I think that last magenta flower is Physostegia.
