What plant or tree produces something that looks exactly like tennis balls? Every fall as I'm driving past a certain wooded area near my home these tennis ball "things" are all over the side of the road. I would stop to pick one up but there is no place to pull over. I'm guessing it is some kind of seed? If I do happen to get one can I plant it?

Thanks - this is so puzzling!

Might be dropped Oak Galls... If that's the case, you won't get anything by planting it.

Osage-orange fruit was my first thought too. Same yellow-green colour as many modern tennis balls.
