So I was walking along a trail today and I came upon 2 different strange looking plants. They are both growing near a creek . Plant #1 stem almost looks like bamboo. And plant #2 has the same stem as the first plant but it has a leaf like structure going vertically up the stem. Could you help me Identify these plants. I live in zone 8a, in South Carolina (USA) if it helps. Thank you :)

First one looks like it might be Joe-Pye weed, Eutrochium (Eupatorium).
