Observed this week in the White Mountains in New Hampshire. Growing in moss under Abies balsamea, at a little over 4,000 feet (1230 m) elevation. Roughly 12 cm (5 inches) tall. Any ideas of what this is?

No leaf clues? Or seemingly lacking leaves altogether (i.e., they've withered by now)?

Yes, pretty withered - not much remaining on stem and no basal leaves. All I can think of is Monotropa uniflora. The capsule seems to match (missing the stigma/ovary part), although I've never seen it open like that. I did see Monotropa uniflora in flower elsewhere on my hike in that general area.

Thanks for the link. Monotropa uniflora seems likely.
