Observed this week in the White Mountains in New Hampshire. Growing in moss under Abies balsamea, at a little over 4,000 feet (1230 m) elevation. Roughly 12 cm (5 inches) tall. Any ideas of what this is?
Yes, pretty withered - not much remaining on stem and no basal leaves. All I can think of is Monotropa uniflora. The capsule seems to match (missing the stigma/ovary part), although I've never seen it open like that. I did see Monotropa uniflora in flower elsewhere on my hike in that general area.
I think you're correct. https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/monotropa/ has some photos that are excellent matches for the capsule walls.
