Is this Styrax Japonicus? It doesn't seem the right tree shape and I haven't seen any photos of Styrax with shiny brown sepals like these, but the size, shape and colour of the fruits is about right. There are several of these trees alternating with the medlars on West 6th, west of Maple in Vancouver.

Definitely Styrax. Looking at the leaves and fruit Styrax japonicus looks the most likely candidate. Cannot find any reference to brown calyx in the books.

The calyx is usually green in summer, but then so are the leaves. I guess the brown calyx is just autumn colour.

Thanks, Luddite and Michael. Here are photos to show why I was so uncertain. The owner of the first tree identified it as Styrax Japonicum in June, so I first learned to recognize the oblong fruit shape, which the first one I posted doesn't have. The other photo is from today, the tree at the corner of my building, which in June had fruits the shape of the photo on the left. So it's also end of season, but the sepals aren't very obvious at all. The fruits apparently get more round as they mature.
