I saw these plants in a garden in Provence, in February(still quite cold). They seem to have bulbs or tubers and my friend has no idea what they are and did not plant them. The area was used for olives or grapes and has never been a garden before, as far as she knows. They look odd enough to be carnivorous. Does anyone know them?

They are Arisaema, a.k.a. "Jack in the pulpit". I know this solely because I planted about 40 seeds of it a while ago and just finished showing my kids a picture of what they will - I hope - look like.

    Close but no cigar.

    Its Arisarum vulgare.

Its a strange tuberous Aroid but not carnivorous.

Thanks to replies. I've got a good lead on where to get more info.
