Hi Folks, My first post so forgive me if I get this wrong. I was on a photographic course in South Wales on the Gower peninsula and took a photograph in the dunes at Three Cliffs Bay. The foregournd includes a succulent plant that I've tried to indentify searching around google for an hour, to no avail. I was hoping someone here could point me in the right direction. As an aside, I was stunned at the plant variety and richness on the Gower! Many thanks for your time! Tim
Silverleaf Nightshade (Solanum elaeagnifolium), perhaps? It's a vascular plant, at any rate, not a succulent.
Hi and thanks for the post! I'm a little unsure of the match and the picture may not have been large enough so I've cropped and enlarged for better identification. The leaves look different from the pictures I've found using Silverleaf Nightshade search on google. Could there be different varieties? Tim
Sea Stock Matthiola sinuata. In Britain, a rare native confined to Devon, Cornwall and the south Wales coasts.
Big thanks! That definitely looks like the one.. Tim p.s. anyone who wants to use this picture - feel free. I've got very hi-res versions if wanted too.
The following is a quote from a friend who knows this part of the South Wales (U.K.) coast line.He recognised it as Mattiola sinuata. "Interestingly, a member of the Cardiff Naturalists found it two years ago on a small dune system at East Aberthaw - this was the furthest East it has been found on the South Wales coast but as the seeds are carried by water it is not surprising. Although uncommon nationally, we do quite well for it in South Wales (and particularly to the West) from Pembrokeshire through to West Glamorgan. I have seen quite a bit of it on Gower and, particularly around Three Cliffs Bay but it also grows on Swansea Bay."
