Might anyone want to ID this for me?

These little evergreen plants looks like little pine trees growing on the forest floor, but the needles are very soft. Our bit of forest is mostly Scotch pine/maples/hazlenuts, etc. In NH. Some of the plants get dappled light here and there, but most are shaded under the canopy. They also grow close to the river lowland near our ferns. Note the long taproot.

We enjoy them and are curious as to what they are. I see them no where else on our property and suspect they would wither in sun.

    No luck searching online.

    Thank you!
