This small flowering tree grows all over Baltimore but I don't remember seeing it anywhere at home in Vancouver. I'm wondering what it is and what the climate difference between the two cities is that makes it suited to Baltimore and not Vancouver. Is it summer heat rather than winter hardiness, since I think that winter minimum temperatures in Baltimore are colder than in Vancouver? (Those small palms that will grow in Vancouver do not seem to be present in Baltimore.) This tree/bush seems to have varieties with blossoms in red, pink, magenta and white.

Yes it is the summer heat. Lagerstroemia, crepe myrtles do best in warm growing regions. There are a few in Vancouver--one at the front entrance of the Garden here, but they do not bloom well every year, so not a popular choice for the landscape in our climate.

I have photographed the one at UBCBG, white flowers, early to mid-August, this one in 2014

and one in West Van at 25th and Bellevue, pink flowers, at the end of September, 2013. I haven't checked up on it since then.

Here is another plant in Baltimore that seems to like heat. (27C and humid at 7:30 am when I took this.) Is this a clematis or something completely different?
