Hello. I was hoping that someone could help me to identify this tree that is growing in my parent's yard in Burns Lake (near Prince George). I'm not sure what hardiness zone that is - 2 maybe? It blooms in late summer (usually early-mid August) and its flowers are similar to a mock orange I think. I've attached 2 photos of the tree. Thank you in advance for your help.
Yep, mock-orange Philadelphus of some sort. There are several species and numerous selected garden hybrids and cultivars in the genus.
Shrub is partly dead, indicating a need for something - perhaps warmer winters! Cutting out dead wood, pulling grass back away from base and mulching or top-dressing might do wonders for its appearance. Flower structure etc. like that of this frequently sold classic cultivar. http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&q=philadelphus+virginal&um=1&sa=N&tab=wi
