I would appreciate help identifying a shrub 1.5 m tall, with burgundy leaves and profuse pink blossoms that are about 2 cm in diameter The shrub is fairly common in front yards in the North Peace region of British Columbia, Canada.

We have a lot of that as trees in Vancouver, but I've never seen it as a hedge. It looks even as though it might not have been deliberately planted, might be rootstock of trees that were there, but the rootstocks of our pink plums are usually one with white flowers and green leaves.
@NorthPeace, are they in bloom now??

Thank you for your kind reply. Yes, they are in bloom now. The ones I've seen so far here in northern BC look like shrubs rather than trees. The plant is new to me, though, so perhaps it can become a tree. Thanks for the link to the Vancouver Cherry Festival. That must be spectacular!

Oh, good, I'm glad to see that it's not the tree that's so common here and that Prunus x cistena is supposed to bloom in late spring.
