    Good morning.
Can anyone tell me what this tree/shrub is? I found it growing in the middle of a spirea--it has long spike-like thorns (3cm) and is about five feet tall. Thanks.

The leaves resemble black raspberry, are they long canes or is it and actual shrub, if it's a shrub it could be a type of rose.

Probably a hawthorn and a bramble both, being two shrubs rather than one.

I was thinking the sample on the right had different, downy stems from the one on the left. Now I see they look similar. The "leaf" on the right would be several of the unfolding spring leaves of a hawthorn rather than a solitary, compound leaf like a bramble makes. When some hawthorn trees bud out in spring the first leaves are bunched or rolled as in the picture, kind of like a folded table napkin.
