In The Garden: seven feet tall - hairy buds, bottom leaves are 18" wide - what could it be?

It's new to me, growing in front of my fence , just to the left of the noxious pest Chinese Elm (the one that I keep trying to cut down, but it grows back every year...)

Looks like Burdock..Arctium sp.

Could it be the lesser Burdock Articum minus ?

 

I always struggle to id which burdock is which.
Easy test...remove a base leaf..is the stem hollow or solid?

But in UK there are just these 2.. but in B.C there may well be others.

Good link Siver surfer. Tbh as a child whatever leaf helped the nettle stings was the right one.

 

Arctium would be useless for stinging nettles.
For that you need ... Rumex obtusifolius...common name broad leaf dock

Awesome!! thanks very much for your help. This burdock (and the pesky Chinese Elm next to it) are apparently THRIVING in this soil - whereas three feet away (behind the fence!) I have had two Magnolia trees PERISH... Each got to five feet tall with a dozen leaves and a few flowers, and then died the next year. Some things are just not meant to be, I guess! ( this town is FULL of magnolias growing everywhere - except the one spot in my tiny yard that I have room for one...)

 

Good evening @rockandroller, nature knows best and as I've always worked by is to see what grows well in an area for decades and that is what to plant for success. Glad you received some help on the forum.
