I have a 7 year old Satomi that looks very healthy. I inspected it this spring and noticed the bark has started to detach from the trunk. It also seems soft on some of the lower branches. Can anyone explain to me what this could be?
http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn7420.html http://web1.msue.msu.edu/msue/imp/modzz/00000424.html The only problem mentioned in the RHS book is anthracnose (first link) wether that could cause as much damage as you mention, i couldn't tell you.
If all else is ok, You may have no problem at all. One of the features you will notice with Cornus kousa as they age is exfoliating bark. Its a natural phenomonon, and simply adds to the charm of the tree.
