    Hi all,

Found this rather weird small saprophyte (?) in upstate NY beside a pond in spring. Any idea what it may be?

Invasive species here, very common and hard to erradicate.

Not a saprophyte, it is just that the spore-bearing stems have no chlorophyll; the normal foliage stems do, and build up food supplies in the root system from which the spore-bearing stems can then grow.
