Hi can anyone help me identify this creepy looking thing and let me know if it's plant live or animal life?

The pods are about an inch in diameter, yellow with red spots. I opened one of them up and there was a flowerlike "filling," and in the center was a tiny little white worm or larva of some sort, about a couple millimeters in size. I don't know if this is an actual cocoon or just some sort of seed which had something burrow into it or lay eggs in it. I found a handful of them scattered around on the ground at the edge of the woods behind my house. I only opened one that was dried up and already partially split (the one on the left in the picture). When I tried to open another I couldn't because when I tried to pierce it with my fingernail clear fluid stared to appear so I just dropped it (it kind of grossed me out) so I don't know what is inside.

It's an insect gall of some sort - I'm sure the experts here will be able to suggest which insect made it.

(One more commonly finds them on the stem or leaf of a plant, rather than detached from the plant, though... although I suppose anything is possible. Perhaps someone picked them and then dropped them?)
