I have a yard with a huge variety of tree, plants and roses that in time I will be questioning you about. Today I am curious about a tag I found on one of my rose bushes. If I read it correctly the name on the tag is "collette meroupis" Is this the name of my rose? For future reference, what information will I need to provide for identification of the other trees and plants in my yard? Looking forward to unraveling the mysteries of my world!! bsamot of San Diego County
It's two different names, not one two word name. Colette is the selling name and 'Meiroupis' is the cultivar name.
Colette is a large flowered climbing rose from the house of Meilland. It's a good rose, but isn't much of a climber, more of a pillar rose. You can grow it as a shrub. 'Meroupis' is actually spelled 'MEIroupis. Note that 'MEI' is the first three letters from the name Meilland. This is useful to know, since it gives us a pretty good idea as to who the hybridizer is, and whatever other names the rose is sold under, the international registered cultivar name will always be the same. Another way of using this to your advantage is when you want to look for all the roses hybridised by a particular hybridiser or nursery. On any search engine, or rose database, just type in the first three letters of the hybridiser's name. For Meilland International, type in MEI. On Helpmefind.com, you will get this extensive list. Type in AUS, and you will get a list of David Austin roses.
>Another way of using this to your advantage is when you want to look for all the roses hybridised by a particular hybridiser or nursery.< That's true only where all the introductions of a company have always used that naming format.
It depends. Photographs of the entire plant, a typical branch and flowers or fruit are usually enough, though not always.
Thank you for your help. I am definitely a newbie but am learning as we speak. The above mentioned rose is planted in front of a trellis. How does one coax the rose to grow on the trellis? I assume that was the reason the past "caretaker" set it up this way. Please bear with my ignorance and thanks again bsamot of San Diego County
