Hi all, I will attach a photo tomorrow when the sun is out. I have a large (30 foot) tree here in Michigan. It has purple leaves that are compound, alternate, smooth edged, shaped like fattened spear-tips. There appears to be a berry of some sort forming, one single berry per stem. The bark is smooth and greyish. In the spring the leaves were green, and some white flowers came out in large clumps, the clump was in the shape of a cone. I need to stress that the leaves are dark purple and were only green during flowering. thanks in advance.
Possibly a purple-leaved chokecherry (Prunus virginiana) variety such as 'Schubert' (also called 'Canada Red').
THATS IT!!! I've been killing myself to figure it out! Thank you so much!!!! Schubert, Canadian Red...cool. :)
Prunus virginiana 'Schubert' was introduced by Oscar H. Will nursery, North Dakota during 1943. P. virginiana 'Canada Red' is a sport of that selection introduced by Bailey nursery, Minnesota. It is faster growing, darker leaved and straighter trunked than 'Schubert'.
Yes, that is frequent. Even the Bailey nursery web site does this, presenting 'Canada Red' as though it were a common name.
