Poppy?!?

    I'm told, by the man in whose garden I saw this flower, that it's a poppy, though he didn't know what kind. As it looks nothing like what I think of as poppies, I'm wondering if anyone here can more fully identify it.

    As in the actual poppy from which opium was made?

    Yes. This is a fancy garden form. Like those with single flowers as seen in pictures of opium fields it is a very common reseeding annual in some parts of North America. Garden centers sell packets of seeds and even growing plants.

    And while I have your attention, I'm figuring this is some kind of dahlia, but am uncertain. Is it? And if so, can you help me further identify it?
