This plant has been bought as Polygonum filiforme (Japanese Knotweed) and the name is probably right. My question is - are these spots typical of the species or is it some botanical variant or cultivar? R.
"Japanese" part is wrong, for this one in particular look up "tovara". Knotweeds have been shuffled, you could find any one kind (not necessarily this one) under Polygonum, Persicaria or Fallopia. Leaf markings typical, big part of appeal.

Japanese knotweed makes a tall clump with thick, jointed stems, big, broad, unmarked leaves with abruptly tapering bases and gradually tapering tips. Flower tassels hang down between leaves, do not occur on ends of stems.
