going by the 'common' name, i'd say it's some form of euphorbia. that doesn't mean i'm correct though!
Searching "african leaf" brings up nothing relevant. Rather often when a newly acquired plant is asked about the common name they were given with it is an alteration of the common name in more general usage, say in this instance it started out as "African bush" or "Asian spice-leaf" (I'm making these up) - the possibilities may be nearly endless. But the plant looks familiar. It might be something fairly common in tropical gardens - or not. You need more background information.
Yeah unfortunately retailers like to change the common name to make it more exciting sounding. I have a cordyline with green leaves and pink edges...which in my gardening book makes it a 'red edge' but I bought it as a 'red dragon'. It makes things confusing!
