Could someone please help me identify this flower. I just returned from Ecuador and I was studying its varying nectar concentration at different elevations.

    thank you

The leaf texture and arrangement of inflorescences reminded me more of Gesneriaceae than Acanthaceae.

Sure enough, after a bit of googling, I find a genus that seems to have this same combination of toothed leaves and spurred corolla. Have a look at genus Gasteranthus in the fairly comprehensive picture gallery of Gesneriaceae at http://www.gesneriads.ca/alphabet.htm

Admittedly there is no species that matches well, but then it is a genus of 40+ species.

There are some more images at http://www.biologie.uni-ulm.de/systax/gesneriaceae/gasteranthus.html and some of these come closer to yours.
