I recently moved into a new home and want to identify a bush or small tree that is growing and spreading around the perimeter of my yard. The branches have sharp "hairs" or "stickers" which are very close together and there are also actual thorns which are farther apart. The largest bush/tree is approx. 5 ft. high and has several shoots coming up aprox. 1-3 ft. from the main plant. The leaves are just opening and are about 1/2" long and 1/4" wide. They are located across from eachother and are green. The trunk on the largest plant is aprox. 2" in diameter. Any general ideas?

Thank-you for your reply tipularia, and although I don't think the plant in question is the one in the pictures, I think you did identify another plant in my yard. I just learned from my neighbor that the plant in question develops purple, very fragrant blooms in spring, early summer. Also, the "hairy stickers" are very close together, with the actual thorns spaced farther apart than in the pictures I viewed.

I will try but it will probably take several days, as my camera is not working. I will have to borrow one. Thanks
