    Hello,

This plant was found on a trail in Frederick county VA. In woodland, I believe sandstone? Shale? Very dry soil. Basal rosette is all I have for id pic as it was taken over the winter.

    Thank you for your help.

p.s. Just noticed some leaves have short “spines” on them…doesn’t look like a cirsium or prickly lettuce though…does it?

No particular luck by comparing it against the illustrations in The Illustrated Companion to Gleason and Cronquist's Manual. I had looked through the Asteraceae in particular. A few things that are close, but I didn't find a good match.

Thank you for your input….I guess I’ll just have to revisit it this Spring and see how it is growing. I understand that basal rosettes are not easy to id by themselves. Thanks again,

Yes, could very well be. That'll teach me for being dissuaded from looking at other families.
