Dawes Arboretum, in Newark, Ohio, will remove approximately 80 plants of 15 varieties: one stand of 40 plants is four decades old. Euonymus alatus, aka 'burning bush', has been deemed invasive. Work is to be completed by spring 2012. http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/local/2012/02/09/snuff-out-burning-bush.html
Yet another east Asian species that finds the similarity of eastern North American conditions too much to its liking. Meanwhile large eastern growers continue to select and produce multiple forms of this and Japanese barberry, Norway maple etc. etc. with ease of production and sales apparently continuing to trump any possible concerns about deleterious impacts on the commonly shared landscape.
Well , why should the Nursery industry be any different than any other business which is motivated and obsessed with the pusuit of wealth at all costs. They certainly are NOT immune to all the usual imperfections that infection most all of mankind. Ever go into a nursery and notice the incorrect lable on a specific shrub or tree ? I use to see it especially with natives. A good example would be a lable of California Sycamore(Plantanus racemosa). The leaves should have looked like this: But instead, they had the characteriistic look of American Sycamore(Plantanus occidentalis) which has more of a Maple looking leaf, hence the reference to that supposed European hybred acerfolia like London Plane Tree. Mostly I've seen these mistakes in Retail Nurseries and when pointed out, the usual response is that "the customers won't notice anyway".
