Alrighty, new to these forums (Hi everyone!) and as the title suggests, my wife and I have moved into a new house and there are some flowers growing in the backyard that I need identified.....and have a few questions about. Here's some pics... We seem to have 2 varieties...white and a purplish/blue. The stems and leaves of the plants (not the flowers) appear similar to daffodils, however the flowers themselves look more like orchids...at least to my inexperienced eye. Assuming you're able to view the images here, you'll see there is a moderately large bed of these and while my wife and I agree that they are quite lovely...they're really in the wrong place in the yard...there's a fence in the yard there that we will be moving soon to open up the yard for our dogs. Not sure if this helps or not, but we're located in Northern/Central Ohio (South Akron) and the plants are located in the middle of the yard where they get LOTS of morning/mid afternoon sun. I think it's a fair guess that these are a perennials...it's seems unlikely that the previous owners of the house put ANY effort into planting this year, since they were selling the house (although we have confirmed thru one of the neighbors that at least one of the previous occupants was a tad "plant crazy", LOL). For the most part, these "popped up" and started flowering over the past few weeks that we've been moving in...they weren't there back in April as we were going thru the inspections and such. So here's the questions... 1.) What are they? 2.) Are they bulbs...seeds...what? 3.) Can they be (easily) transplanted? 4.) Any clue if they are toxic/poisonous to animals (particularly dogs)? Our thinking here is that we'd like to move these to the front of the house. They seem to flower just after the daffodils and tulips we had at our old house, so I'm thinking that mixing these new flowers with some of the old bulbs might help us towards that whole idea of having something flowering out front all summer. Since the green leafs and stems of these plants are so similar to daffodils, I'm thinking they'd make a nice mix for something that's both pretty and fairly low maintenance. BTW...while I'm primarily concerned with the flowering plants here (obviously), I'd be interested in any info on the green leafy plants you see growing in front of the blue flowers as well (in the last image)...we seem to have several of those popping up all over the new yard! If you need additional info to id these plants, I'll do what I can however please keep in mind that I'm not much of a gardener at all...my concept of maintaining the garden typically involves a weed whacker and/or a lawn mower. Other than a few bulbs here and there at the old house, along with a tomato plant or two, most of my gardening experience really is limited to a "Chia Herb Garden", LOL! I'm grateful for any useful info people can provide - thanks!
The white and purple flowers are iris--maybe Siberian iris. There are lots of types iris. The broad leaved plant in front of them is hosta. Both of these perennials spread and need to be divided occasionally, so you will be able to just dig a clump and move it to a new spot fairly easily.
