Sends out new tendrils within 24hrs of pruning. Estimate plant is at least 20 years old with main trunk about 8~9 in. in dia. Branches range from green and supple to woody 1+in. dia.
You're wise to keep it pruned. I remember one a fellow had planted at ground level, growing up a flight of stairs to a deck and then all around the railing. It's probably still growing.
Random tall second growth native conifers in western Washington serving as hosts to planted Asian wisterias have them throughout the canopy; I don't remember specifically but the Lam Asian Garden may have one or more examples of such also. Along with 'Kiftsgate' roses and an Actinidia deliciosa that go way up there as well.
